These days my reading is more in fits and starts between naps and Eliza's bedtime, but I've been racing through this book of Michael Gawenda's, American Notebook. Gawenda is the former editor of Melbourne's Age newspaper, and the book is about his time as Washington correspondent. It's an honest, intelligent and unbiased book about American politics and people from the perspective of an outsider. He manages to see beyond all of the hyperbole and predjudices about the US often found among small "L" liberal Australians - while not going to the other extreme of embracing all that is American just because it's a world superpower. While he originally supported the US-led invasion of Iraq, it's interesting to read about his gradual disallusionment with Bush. Here is his final editorial as Washington correspondent, which I also enjoyed.
